Kelly Clement (above) studied animal science at NCSU, has taught for over 20 years, at Buckhorn for over 10 years! 

Bridget, a USDF Silver medalist (above, R) instructs and trains beginner  thru  FEI dressage, as well as hunters.

 

 Karen McKinney (R) Karen has been involved in the equestrian field for over 25 years as student, teacher,  barn manager, and horse owner. In addition to having instructed 100’s of riding students she has worked with youth of all ages through 4H and currently serves as advisor to the Wake County 4H Horse Youth Council.

 

Robert Savage (R, below) began riding in 1969 a the age of 7and had a successful Junior career, qualifying in 1979 and 1980 for both the AHSA Medal and ASPCA Maclay finals at Harrisburg and New York respectively.  After college he began working at ByWay Farms in Medford, NY, riding, showing and training of all competition horses for both the hunter ring and the jumper ring, and assisting in the management of AHSA (now USEF) rated horse shows including course designing.

Training the Horse and Rider~

 

 At BUCKHORN FARM, our goal is to provide the best environment for the enjoyment of horse riding sports.  Our private  country setting provides a peaceful atmosphere to enjoy your horse. Here you will find opportunities to train to compete, to fox hunt or 

simply improve your riding skills.

The instructional focus is on hunter/jumpers and dressage-  beginner through showing at USEF shows.  Our show team competes regularly on the NCHJA circuit, and at

NCDCTA dressage shows. We are also proud to be the home of the NCSU Dressage Team.

A schedule of shows at Buckhorn provides the chance to show  on-site.

TRAINING for your horse is offered both by the month, by the ride, or

 individual  arrangement.  Call us to discuss a program to suit your individual needs and goals.

 

The Riding Academy~

 

Lessons are available for ages eight through adult, on your own horse or on one of our mounts, as a private (on your own horse) or small group  lesson. Group lessons are held Monday-Friday afternoons, Saturday mornings, and Sunday afternoon. (Beginner students are 3-4/group.)

  

Our instructors are experienced riders and teachers, and are mature adults-together, we have over 100 years teaching experience and over 120 years riding experience!  Programs tailored for our home-schooled and year- round students are available weekday mornings.

We hold 2 “Academy Shows” each year just for the students. (see show page)

A unique leasing program, Riding Partners, is available for experienced riders. We encourage  your continued riding education and offer on site clinicians regularly. A schedule of spring and fall shows on site provides the chance to compete conveniently.       THE CARE OF YOUR HORSE

 

We pride ourselves on the quality of care your horse will receive. Twice daily feeding and watering routines insure that your horse is under watchful eyes. We provide only high quality hays and feeds, and assure that fresh water is constantly available. Individual supplements, provided by the owner, are given with the morning feed. An optional third feeding is available for those horses with high nutritional requirements. Excellent turn-out is available, scheduled according to weather and season. We maintain a low ratio of horses/acre to insure proper pasture maintenance. As owner/managers, we live on the farm.

     Regular managed care is the only  way in insure the optimum health of your horse. Routinely  scheduled visits by the farrier are biweekly, and available at other times by appointment. Veterinary service for  biannual vaccines are an integral part of our health program and are provided through an experienced equine specialty practice. Should any exceptional situation arise, the NC State Veterinary Teaching Hospital is only a 25 minute drive from the farm.

    Riding Lesson Program

  Instruction is available for children aged 10 through adults, on your own horse or on one of our mounts. We have horses to compliment a variety of skill levels, from beginner to advanced. Students are grouped according to skill and experience level, and by age.  Maximum  class size is 4  students, with beginners limited to 3 students. Private lessons are available and required for the first lesson.

Beginners: Introduction to the horse, familiarization with terms relating to the horse and his equipment. Basic stable safety. Preparing the horse for a ride. Leading, mounting and dismounting. Building confidence and learning balance on the horse. The basic commands or aids. Control at the walk and trot.

Advanced beginner: Control at the walk and trot, posting, introduction of the canter. The training figures and their importance, keeping a steady rhythym. Work over ground poles and cavaletti.

Intermediate: Confirming work at the canter, introduce jumping from the canter.  Introduce small jumps at the trot.Trail riding and riding in  the fields.

Advanced Intermediate: Refining work  on canter leads, learning to ride a course of jumps, adjusting the strides of the horse.

Advanced: Polishing the aids and posture. Riding  uneven terrain, control of the horse at speed, competitive riding, dressage theory and practice.

Lessons are booked by the month only, and may be scheduled  for days, evenings,  or  weekends. Adult beginners welcome! Gift certificates are available. Sorry, no daily rentals.
